Fismes Memorial 18
What do we like?
The Fismes Memorial 18 was inaugurated on September 15, 2018, one hundred years after the Battle of Fismes and Fismette.
The town of Fismes was the scene of major military operations, most notably from August to September 1918, following the engagement of the United States Army contingent on French soil.
The commune of Fismes wished to highlight its history and pay tribute to the many soldiers who fought during the confrontations in Fismes, by setting up a place of remembrance near the memorial bridge on the banks of the Vesle, the only one of its kind in France. It was donated by the State of Pennsylvania after the First World War, in tribute to all the American soldiers who died to liberate Fismes.
This place of remembrance highlights the ties that unite Fismois and Americans, particularly with the state of Pennsylvania, through their shared past during the Great War.
This project has been awarded the label of the Mission du Centenaire 1914/1918.
