Regional Nature Park Montagne de Reims
What do we like?
The Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park, created in 1976, is the green lung of the Marne, covering 533km² and 63 communes in the department.
Forested plateaux, wine-growing hillsides, the Marne canal, agricultural valleys... the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park cultivates the art of contrasts.
The fauna is rich, with 59 species of insects, 36 species of mammals, particularly rodents, 22 species of fish and crustaceans, as well as several species of amphibians, birds and reptiles, some of which are protected... but so is the flora, with just over 150 species of plants and trees listed, including the famous "faux de Verzy". These twisted beech trees with their gnarled, misshapen trunks remain an enigma for scientists and a perpetual source of amazement for walkers.
With over 1,000 beech trees, the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park, with the state forest of Verzy, is the world's leading reserve of beech trees. The most characteristic of these have been given a name, inspired by their unique shapes: the Umbrella tree, the Bride's tree, the Ox's head tree, etc.
The Park is full of treasures! 300 km of waymarked footpaths and numerous cycling and horse-riding routes will take you through the Montagne de Reims Regional Nature Park and help you discover its natural and cultural heritage.
